Sri lankan cricket fans are furious and angry towards the comments made in Vimasuma program of the state owned Independent Television Network following Sri Lanka cricket team’s defeat against Pakistan team at the Cricket world cup 2011. Vimasuma program claims to discuss about the current political events in the country and usually telecast after the ITN sinhala news. This program is well known for its unconditional support to the government and its mud slinging campaigns against the opposite parties and politicians.
Following the comments against Mahela Jayawardana and Thilan Samaraweera, Sri Lankan cricket fans reacted angrily. There were thousands of comments in social media sites like Facebook, Forums and Blogs. Unlike any other situation where we can see at least two or three schools of thought, fans reactions were unanimously against the writer of this program. This program is written by Mahinda Abeysundara who is also the cheif editor of state owned Dinamina News Paper.
D.S.De Silva, The chairmen of Sri lanka cricket said that this is an attempt to demoralize Sri Lanka cricket team. Even Sri Lanka president Mahinda Rajapaksha had already advised the media not to engage in activities which will affect Sri lankan cricket teams morale. Sri lanka cricket does not have a plan for any legal action at the moment but it is reported that Mahela jayawardana has taken steps to file a case and his lawyers are drafting a letter to “get to the bottom” of accusations. Media friendly Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara has not still shared his thoughts on this accusation but it was reported that the team is planing to discuss the issue with Sri Lanka president Mahinda Rajapaksha.
Meanwhile, ITN who accused of implying Sri lanka vice-captain Mahela Jayawardana was guilty of match fixing has unconditionally apologized. Opposition party leaders like UNP deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya and JVP Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath also issued statements condemning the charges.
Following is the video of the program which implied match fixing accusation. (Video source: You Tube)
