There is a news spreading in Sri Lanka saying that the World cup final match between Sri Lanka and India going to be moved to Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is reported that the two team is now heading for Sri Lanka in a special flight. I noticed this news in Divaina National news paper (Link) and many of my friends told me that they got SMS news alerts telling that match has been shifted to Sri Lanka due to the security concerns in India. The same news is now spreading very fast in Facebook and popular Sri Lankan online forums.
We had many people raising the same question at our Lanka Help Q & A site and ultimately we decided to keep only one question and add a clarification here.
If you forgot that Today is April fools day : You must have believed this and must have been happy as Sri lanka team will get some ground support and advantage of home condition. But unfortunately I do not think this is true. In the fast we have experienced similar joke from main stream media and due to utter unrealistic nature I can assure you that this is yet another false news just to celebrate the April Fools Day.
Why I tell that this is utterly unrealistic :
1. What will happen to the Tickets and Indian Cricket fans – ICC will not anyway make a such a decision, India is one of their main income resource.
2. Isn’t it possible to tighten up security if there is any threat. It will be much more easy to occupy few Army regiments instead of changing the venues.
3. Will the players agree to travel up and down and play in such a hurry, a final game of a World cup?
4. Was Sri lanka ground kept ready in advance for tis situation. How the TV broadcasters adopt to the situation with a short notice ?
If this is a woven story , there is something more I am concerned about. The international relationships between Sri Lanka and India has not been going well during the recent fast. There are many instances that Sri Lankan higher ranks and officials allegedly involved in spreading false information concerning India and Sri lanka’s security matters. I am not sure how India will see this rumor at this moment.
