“Mal Wehi Poda” – Latest Song collection by Sunil Edirisinghe
After years of silence veteran vocalist Sunil Edirisinghe is ready to shower the audience with a flower rain. His latest collection of songs “Mal Wehi Poda” released today the 1st of September at the Public Library auditorium. The lyric writers includes both seniors and novels namely;Kumaratunga Munidasa, Rathna Sri Wijesinghe,Kumaradasa Saputhanthri, Bandula Nanayakkarawasam,Samudra Wettasinghe,Ven.Kiramba Sumangala Thero,Nelson Demuni etc. As usually most of the songs were music by his best friend Rohana Weerasinghe accompanied by H.M.Jayawardene,Navaratne Gamage,Nalaka Anjana Kumara etc. Duets were sung with Pradeepa Ariyadasa and Rashmi Sangeetha.
The album is meant to be a new dimension in his music career according to Sunil.” I tried my best to get the contribution of talented novel lyric writers and music directors to this album as it will be benefited for the industry” said sunil. His latest hit song “Methram Siyumalida Kalugal” written by Rajiv Wasantha Welgama is a best example for the talent of new comers and is among the song collection of new album.
“I was lucky to influence by a person like maestro Amaradeva during my early childhood when I had to accompany my sister to his music class. I was inspired by the pure Sri Lankan music heard there and my vocal skills sharpen day by day”
“I am the youngest in the family and it’s them who were first to experience my talents, and I got the pleasure of having the advice of music giants such as Amaradeva and Victor Ratnayake. Especially it was my eldest brother Sathischandra Edirisinghe who introduced me to the music field”
Sunil’s debut “Sandakada Pahanaka” was for his eldest brother’s film “Matara Achchci”, which was music by Victor Ratnayake. “ I had to sing that song again and again for 11 times during the recording to satisfy the music director, I still have that discipline and patience, and it’s the secret of success of my music career. But unfortunately I don’t see that dedication with the new generation, it may be due to the use of modern technology.”
“With the introduction of Open Economy policy in late 70’s the fate of SLBC changed dramatically, and several private channels were came to the industry with a new trend of music. In early days it was after a through quality assurance and supervision a song was aired by SLBC, but the new channels does not maintain that quality, supply for the request was their norm.”

Sunil has always shown a preference for songs with meaningful lyrics, which touch our hearts and go deep down to our soul. Having over 600 songs to his credit, Sunil Edirisinghe has won a number of " SarasaviAwards" and was also honoured with a Presidential Award in 1983. He has won the "Swarna Sankha Award" on two occasions.
